Hilton Honors Card from American Express deep dive

A solid and low-cost (well, actually free!) hotel rewards card, the Amex Hilton Honors Card is a great way to maximize rewards for frequent guests of Hilton properties. Given its ties to Hilton, however, it’s not ideal for travelers looking to rack up rewards for non-Hilton travel.

Get it: If you’re a regular guest of Hilton hotels and resorts looking for more ways to accrue Hilton Honors points

Given the Hilton Honors Card has no annual fee, just having the card certainly can’t hurt your bank account—so the question is whether it’s the best rewards card for your travel and spending habits.

Whether you’re already a Hilton Honors member or not, opening a Hilton Honors Card can automatically boost your rewards status and provide unlimited opportunities to earn Hilton Honors points. Cardholders who derive the maximum value from the Hilton Honors Card will, therefore, be those who stay frequently (or exclusively) at Hilton properties. Luckily, there are more than 4,600 of these worldwide, so you’ll have plenty of options no matter where you travel.

Some of the benefits of the Hilton Honors Card from American Express include:

  • No annual fee: The Amex Hilton Honors Card does not have an annual fee, and additional cards (such as for family members) can be added to the account for free
  • Hilton Honors bonus points across the board: Purchases on the Hilton Honors Card with participating hotels or resorts within the Hilton Portfolio earn 7X Hilton Honors bonus points; purchases at U.S. restaurants, supermarkets, and gas stations (excluding superstores and warehouse clubs) earn 5X; most other goods and services purchased on the Hilton Honors Card earn 3X (excluding fees, cash advances, and other cash equivalents)
  • A plethora of ways to redeem your points: Hilton Honors points can be redeemed not only for free hotel stays at more than 4,800 hotels and resorts around the world, but also for car rentals, shopping and dining, and charity donations
  • Bonus points for online bookings: When you book and pay online for an upcoming Hilton stay with your Hilton Honors Card, you’ll receive 500 Hilton Honors bonus points
  • Hilton Honors status upgrades: All cardmembers receive complimentary Hilton Honors Silver status, which offers perks including automatic bonus points towards higher status tiers and free nights for longer stays. Cardmembers who spend at least $20,000 within the calendar year will be upgraded to Hilton Honors Gold status through the end of the following year, which offers the same perks at Silver status as well as additional benefits such as upgrades and bonus Hilton Honors points.

Keep in mind that, as with any credit card, additional Terms and Restrictions apply, so read them carefully before using your new card.

Skip it: If you’re looking for a card to take on international travels, or you’d like to be rewarded for purchases from more than one hotel brand

As with most hotel-branded credit cards, the Amex Hilton Honors Card offers the most value for purchases and points redemption with Hilton properties, so the Hilton Honors Card from American Express isn’t the best fit for those who’d rather not be constrained to the Hilton ecosystem. In addition, it does charge an international transaction fee despite there being Hilton properties across the world, so it’s not the card to bring with you when you visit other countries.

Consider these drawbacks of the Hilton Honors Card from American Express:

  • Unideal for international travel: Despite being a good card to use for stays at Hilton properties worldwide, the Hilton Honors Card from Amex does charge for foreign transactions at a rate of 2.7% after conversion to USD
  • Not for the unloyal: This card offers the most bonus points for purchases with Hilton, so it is most valuable for frequent guests of Hilton resorts and hotels. If you tend to bounce around between hotel brands, a more general travel rewards or cash back card may be a better fit
  • The best benefits are reserved for big spenders and repeat guests: While this card grants complimentary Hilton Honors Silver status, you’ll still have to work for Gold or Diamond status, the levels that offer perks like room upgrades and bonus Hilton Honors points
  • Not a low-interest card: If you’re planning to carry a credit card balance, this isn’t the card to do it on, with no introductory interest rate offer and a mediocre APR compared to some other cards on the market

Summary

The Hilton Honors Card is a great way to earn more Hilton Honors rewards and boost your member status without having to worry about an annual fee. If you’re not a frequent guest of Hilton properties, however, you won’t be rewarded for your stays with non-Hilton properties and might be better served by a more general travel rewards card.
