Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card deep dive

The Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express is a level above the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card—both in potential rewards and in how much it’ll cost you. Read on to determine whether the additional cost is worth it for you, or if the Gold card (or a different travel rewards card) might be a better option.

Get it: If you plan to spend at least $25,000 on the card per calendar year, and you travel frequently with Delta airlines

As compared to the Gold Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card, the Platinum card’s welcome bonus is only more by 5,000 miles and $50 in statement credits. Where the Platinum card starts to look different, however, is once you spend at least $25,000 per calendar year, which qualifies you for additional miles and Medallion® Qualification Miles. Once you qualify to become a Medallion Member, you’ll be eligible for additional benefits such as complimentary upgrades and miles bonuses, which can be ideal for those who travel frequently on routes served by Delta.

Some of the benefits of the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express include:

  • A welcome bonus (times three): The limited time welcome bonus offers 70,000 bonus miles and 10,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) after you spend $3,000 in purchases on your new Card within your first 3 months
  • Work your way towards luxury travel: Your 10,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles will jumpstart you towards becoming a SkyMiles Medallion Member. Once you’ve earned enough points to become a member, you’ll be able to redeem a number of premium travel benefits, such as complimentary first class upgrades, priority boarding, and more. Additional Medallion qualification points beyond your welcome bonus are awarded when you fly with Delta
  • Travel with a friend: Each year when you renew your Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card, you’ll receive a domestic main cabin round-trip companion certificate, which covers flight cost for your companion minus taxes and fees
  • Extra benefits for big spenders: Those who spend more than $25,000 per calendar year in eligible purchases (good and services, not fees, cash advances, etc.) on their Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card will earn 10,000 bonus miles and 10,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles. These mile bonuses double if you spend more than $50,000 in one calendar year
  • Unlimited opportunities to earn miles: All purchases on this card earn one mile, with the exception of card fees, balance transfers, and other cash equivalents, which are not eligible for any miles, and purchases with Delta, which earn two miles. There is no limit to the number of miles you can earn on this card

Remember that Terms and Restrictions apply to all card benefits, so take a look before starting to make purchases on your new card.

Skip it: If you won’t spend at least around an average of $2,000 per month on the card, and don’t like being tied to a specific airline

While the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card has the potential to earn you tens of thousands of bonus miles, companion certificates for traveling with a friend, and premium travel benefits, none of this will happen if you don’t spend enough on it. In addition, premium benefits only apply to Delta flights and miles can only be redeemed with Delta and their partner airlines, making the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card unideal for travelers who do not fly on Delta routes frequently, or who simply like to shop around for lower airfare rates between airlines.

Further, those looking for a card that will earn bonus miles for everyday purchases and non-airline travel expenses won’t find those benefits here, as additional perks on the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card are associated only with purchases from Delta.

Consider these drawbacks of the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card:

  • No escaping the annual fee: The Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card comes with an annual fee of $195, which isn’t waived for year one—meaning you won’t have the chance to take your card for a spin before committing to the fee
  • Big rewards come with big spending: While all purchases on this card earn miles, the rate of one mile per dollar isn’t anything to write home about. When things do get exciting is when you start spending and flying a lot, with Miles Boost® (minimum spend of $25,000 per year) and Medallion elite status perks. Cardholders who won’t spend enough to redeem these extras will therefore be better served by a card that offers higher rewards rates
  • Not for carrier hoppers: Unlike travel rewards cards not tied to a specific airline, which often allow you to earn bonus points for any travel expense, purchases on Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card only count for bonus miles and towards Medallion qualification if they are made with Delta. If you don’t travel frequently on Delta, you’ll likely gain more value from a more general travel rewards card
  • High interest rates: If you’re in the market for a card that earns you elite status, chances are you’re in it for the points, not the option to carry a balance—but it’s worth mentioning that you won’t get any interest rate breaks with this card, and no introductory rate offers, so interest will start accruing right away

Summary

While the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express allows cardholders to gain points towards complimentary flights and a slew of added perks, many of the card’s bonuses are unlocked only by a significant amount of spending on the card, in addition to frequent travel with Delta. Those looking for extra points on non-Delta purchases, bonuses regardless of total spending level, and the option to redeem rewards from any airline would therefore be better-served by a different card.
