Citi AAdvantage Platinum Card deep dive

The Citi AAdvantage Platinum card at a glance seems like a great deal—and it is in many ways. But for non-American Airlines travelers there are better options out there. So, be sure to understand this card’s benefits and limitations before applying.

Get it: If you’re a regular American Airlines traveler looking to maximize your travel rewards

Citi and American Airlines have teamed up to offer a whole slew of benefits with the Citi AAdvantage Platinum card, including a generous welcome bonus, a fee waiver for the first year, and extra perks when you redeem miles, such as discounts and miles back. If you find yourself flying frequently with American, it’s hard to go wrong with the Citi AAdvantage Platinum card.

Some of the benefits of the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Card include:

  • A sign-up bonus to write home about: The standard welcome bonus for the Citi/AAdvantage Platinum card is 30,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® miles after spending $1,000 in purchases in your first three months from account opening
  • Miles for every purchase: Earn two miles per dollar spent with American Airlines, including on, American Airlines reservations, and American Airlines airport and city ticket counters. There is no cap on the miles you can earn, but do keep in mind miles will expire if you don’t redeem at least once for 18 months. Expired miles may be eligible for reactivation for a fee
  • No foreign transaction fees: With all of the destinations you can fly with American and their partners, it’s no surprise that the AAdvantage Platinum card doesn’t charge for non-U.S. transactions
  • No fee for year one: Unlike many airline credit cards, the Citi AAdvantage Platinum waives the annual fee for year one, after which you’ll pay $95 per year
  • Mileage discounts: Having a credit card tied to AAdvantage awards gives you exclusive access to reduced mileage awards. When you redeem miles earned with your Citi AAdvantage Platinum card, you’ll receive a 1,000 to 7,500-mile discount for certain itineraries, depending on the length of your flight and whether you’re booking round-trip or one-way
  • Miles back when you redeem: Earn 10% of your AAdvantage miles back each time you redeem, up to 10,000 bonus miles per calendar year
  • First checked bag free, preferred boarding privileges, and food discounts: Pay no checked bag fee for your first checked bag, within size and weight limits, and board before economy (but after Priority) for domestic flights. This benefit applies to the primary cardholder and up to four customers traveling with and listed on the same reservation as the cardholder. Also, stay well-fed with 25% off of food and beverages purchased with your Citi AAdvantage Platinum card on flights operated by American Airlines

Skip it: If you’re looking for super flexible rewards, no annual fee, or introductory APR offers

As you might expect, the Citi AAdvantage Platinum card is most valuable when you purchase flights and redeem miles with American Airlines, so it’s probably not the best fit for an airline hopper. Given its annual fee (after the first year), you’ll want to be sure you redeem enough rewards to make it worth it, which may be difficult if you fly infrequently with American.

Consider these drawbacks of the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Card:

  • Annual fee: While $95 is in line with what many other airline credit cards charge, it’s worth the reminder that you’ll have to pay for the privilege of using your Citi AAdvantage Platinum card after the first year
  • Great credit, high interest: You’ll need good to excellent credit to be eligible for this card, so it’s not for those just starting out. In addition, the Citi AAdvantage Platinum card offers no introductory interest breaks, charging 16.99% to 24.99% on purchases and balance transfers from day one. Cash advances will cost you even more at 26.24%, and after a late or returned payment, your interest could go up to 29.99%
  • In-flight discounts only apply to food and beverages: If you were looking for a break on wifi or other in-flight purchases, you won’t find it here. The 25% discount only applies to food and drink purchases
  • Redemption options are limited: If you’re looking for a card that offers cash back or other more flexible redemption options, this probably isn’t your winner. AAdvantage miles can be redeemed for flights, upgrades, and certain car rental and hotel purchases
  • Miles can expire: You’ll need to redeem miles at least once every 18 months to keep them, so this isn’t the card to accrue miles for years with before booking a huge trip

The Citi AAdvantage Platinum card is a great way for loyal American fliers to boost their mile earnings, and it offers a number of sign-up and redemption benefits. If you’re a fan of a different airline or tend to jump around airlines based on price, however, a different travel card may be a better fit for your spending habits.
