American Express Everyday® Credit Card deep dive

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card is a great way to earn points without having to pay an annual fee and has some attractive welcome offers for new cardholders, but may not be a great fit for big spenders or travelers.

Get it: If you spend a significant amount at supermarkets, are looking for a rewards card with no annual fee, or plan to use your new credit card for a balance transfer or large purchase

The Amex EveryDay® card offers 2X points for your first $6,000 per calendar year on US supermarket purchases, so it could be a fit if groceries make up a significant portion of your monthly spending. Further, you won’t have to worry about balancing rewards with an annual fee, as this card does not have an annual fee.

In addition, the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card offers 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers (though the balance transfer fee still applies) for the first year, making it a great option for those looking for a respite from high-interest credit card debt or to finance a large purchase. Keep in mind that this offer ends after you have the card for 12 months, so it’s a good idea to pay off as much debt as you can before then.

Some of the benefits of the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card include:

  • Earn 10,000 Membership Rewards® points after you use your new Card to make $1,000 in purchases in your first 3 months.
  • Low intro APR: 0% for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers, then a variable rate, currently 14.99% to 25.99%.
  • $0 balance transfer fee. Balance transfers must be requested within 60 days from account opening.
  • 2x points at US supermarkets, on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1x); 1x points on other purchases.
  • Use your Card 20 or more times on purchases in a billing period and earn 20% more points on those purchases less returns and credits.
  • Over 1.5 million more places in the U.S. started accepting American Express® Cards in 2017.

Skip it: If you don’t use a credit card often, don’t shop frequently at supermarkets, or are looking for rewards with maximum flexibility

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card offers the most points for supermarket purchases and to cardholders who use their card at least 20 times per billing cycle, so if you’re spending your money on specific categories like dining out or using cash instead of plastic, you may be better served by a rewards card that offers bonuses regardless of purchase volume and in other categories of spending.

In addition, many similar cards offer rewards in the form of cash back, which can be redeemed as a statement credit, making it super simple to use the points you’ve accrued. With the Amex EveryDay® card, on the other hand, you’ll have to redeem points through Amex Offers, adding some limitations to how your rewards can be used.

Consider these drawbacks of the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card:

  • Infrequent card users miss out: One of the main benefits of this card is the 20% point bonus when you use it at least 20 times in a billing period. If you’re paying more often with cash or a different card, you won’t be able to take advantage of this perk
  • No bonus points, except for supermarket purchases: If you find yourself spending a significant amount on dining, travel, or gas, you may be better off with a rewards card that offers bonus points in those categories
  • Rewards must be redeemed through Amex Offers: While Amex Offers does allow cardholders to redeem points for a number of different purchases, it’s slightly less flexible than cash back, which can simply be redeemed as a statement credit
  • Not for international travel: International purchases on this card are hit with a 2.7% foreign transaction fee after conversion to USD—not to mention they won’t earn you any bonus points, like some travel rewards cards, will for travel-related purchases made abroad

Summary

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card comes with a point and APR welcome offer, as well as bonus points for supermarket purchases and frequent card utilization—all without charging an annual fee. But it may not be a great fit for those who spend more money in categories like gas, dining, shopping, or travel. If you don’t frequent supermarkets, take a look at some other no annual fee cards.
