The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card is just what its name suggests—a solid card for everyday spending that offers bonus rewards for supermarket purchases and frequent spending.

This review will help you understand some pros and cons of the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card.

Highlights

  • No annual fee for the primary cardholder or for any additional members added to the account
  • Earn 10,000 Membership Rewards® points when you spend a total of at least $1,000 total within three months of opening your account
  • 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 months. The APR increases to between 13.99% to 23.99% after year one, and balance transfers are charged a fee of $5 or 3% of the transfer amount, whichever is greater
  • 2X points on purchases at US supermarkets, not including superstores or warehouse clubs, for your first $6,000 in supermarket spend per calendar year
  • Earn 20% more points when you make at least 20 purchases on your Amex EveryDay® card per billing period, not including fees, purchase of prepaid cards, or other cash equivalents. For example, let’s say you spend $1,000 per month on 20 or more purchases and do not shop at supermarkets. That’ll amount to a base rate of 1,000 points, plus 200 bonus points for hitting the 20-purchase mark

American Express Everyday® Credit Card deep dive

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card is a great way to earn points without having to pay an annual fee and has some attractive welcome offers for new cardholders, but may not be a great fit for big spenders or travelers.

Get it: If you spend a significant amount at supermarkets, are looking for a rewards card with no annual fee, or plan to use your new credit card for a balance transfer or large purchase

The Amex EveryDay® card offers 2X points for your first $6,000 per calendar year on US supermarket purchases, so it could be a fit if groceries make up a significant portion of your monthly spending. Further, you won’t have to worry about balancing rewards with an annual fee, as this card does not have an annual fee.

In addition, the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card offers 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers (though the balance transfer fee still applies) for the first year, making it a great option for those looking for a respite from high-interest credit card debt or to finance a large purchase. Keep in mind that this offer ends after you have the card for 12 months, so it’s a good idea to pay off as much debt as you can before then.

Some of the benefits of the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card include:

  • 10,000 point welcome offer: Spend at least $1,000 within three months of when your application was approved, and you’ll receive 10,000 extra points
  • 0% introductory APR: Amex EveryDay® cardholders enjoy 12 months of zero interest on purchases and balance transfers, after which the APR will increase to between 13.99% to 23.99%. Do note that balance transfers will still incur a fee amounting to the greater of $5 or 3% of the amount of the transfer
  • No annual fee: The Amex EveryDay® card has a no annual fee, and additional cards are free, so you can add family members to the account to rack up more rewards
  • More points for frequent spending: By using your Amex EveryDay® 20 or more times per billing period, you’ll receive 20% more points on those purchases (not including returns and credits). Fees, interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, and other cash equivalents do not count toward your 20 purchases
  • 2X points for US supermarket purchases: While most purchases on this card earn 1X points, US supermarket purchases (excluding superstores and warehouse clubs) earn 2X points for your first $6,000 in US supermarket spending per year
  • A plethora of redemption options: Redeem your points with Amex Offers for shopping, dining, and more.

Keep in mind that Terms and Conditions apply to the above benefits; it’s a good idea to read them through before you start using your card

Skip it: If you don’t use a credit card often, don’t shop frequently at supermarkets, or are looking for rewards with maximum flexibility

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card offers the most points for supermarket purchases and to cardholders who use their card at least 20 times per billing cycle, so if you’re spending your money on specific categories like dining out or using cash instead of plastic, you may be better served by a rewards card that offers bonuses regardless of purchase volume and in other categories of spending.

In addition, many similar cards offer rewards in the form of cash back, which can be redeemed as a statement credit, making it super simple to use the points you’ve accrued. With the Amex EveryDay® card, on the other hand, you’ll have to redeem points through Amex Offers, adding some limitations to how your rewards can be used.

Consider these drawbacks of the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card:

  • Infrequent card users miss out: One of the main benefits of this card is the 20% point bonus when you use it at least 20 times in a billing period. If you’re paying more often with cash or a different card, you won’t be able to take advantage of this perk
  • No bonus points, except for supermarket purchases: If you find yourself spending a significant amount on dining, travel, or gas, you may be better off with a rewards card that offers bonus points in those categories
  • Rewards must be redeemed through Amex Offers: While Amex Offers does allow cardholders to redeem points for a number of different purchases, it’s slightly less flexible than cash back, which can simply be redeemed as a statement credit
  • Not for international travel: International purchases on this card are hit with a 2.7% foreign transaction fee after conversion to USD—not to mention they won’t earn you any bonus points, like some travel rewards cards, will for travel-related purchases made abroad

Summary

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card comes with a point and APR welcome offer, as well as bonus points for supermarket purchases and frequent card utilization—all without charging an annual fee. But it may not be a great fit for those who spend more money in categories like gas, dining, shopping, or travel. If you don’t frequent supermarkets, take a look at some other no annual fee cards.
