Student Loan Refinance Interest Rates Soar for 5-Year Loans, While 10-Year Loans Edge Down

Check out the latest trends for student loan refinancing interest rates from the Credible marketplace, updated weekly.

Matt Carter Matt Carter Edited by Sarah Maroney Published October 19, 2020 | Updated March 27, 2023

Our goal is to give you the tools and confidence you need to improve your finances. Although we receive compensation from our partner lenders, whom we will always identify, all opinions are our own. Credible Operations, Inc. NMLS # 1681276, is referred to here as "Credible."

Student loan refinance interest rates have risen by over half of a percentage point this week for 5-year variable-rate loans, while 10-year fixed rate loans have edged down.

Here are the latest trends in interest rates for student loan refinancing from the Credible marketplace, updated weekly.

During the week of March 20, 2023:

  • Rates on 10-year fixed-rate loans averaged 7.05%, down from 7.12% the week before and up from 4.02% a year ago. The record low for the term is 3.33%, set on Dec. 13, 2021.
  • Rates on 5-year variable-rate loans averaged 6.70%, up significantly from 6.06% from the week before and up from 3.12% a year ago. The record low for the term is 2.41%, set on Nov. 22, 2021.

Student loan refinancing historical rate trends

Student loan refinancing can be a good strategy for paying off education debt faster or lowering your monthly payments. But a lot depends on the interest rate you could qualify for.

The chart above shows average prequalified rates for borrowers with credit scores of 720 or higher who used the Credible marketplace to select a lender. The chart lists average weekly rates for the last year.

If you qualify for student loan refinancing, the interest rate the lender offers you depends on factors such as:

  1. Your credit score
  2. The type of loan you’re seeking (fixed or variable rate)
  3. The loan repayment term

Check Your Refinancing Rates

The chart above shows that a good credit score can help you get a lower rate, and that rates tend to be higher on loans with fixed interest rates and longer repayment terms. Because each lender has its own method of evaluating borrowers, it’s a good idea to request student loan refinancing rates from multiple lenders so you can compare your options.

Through Credible, you can compare your prequalified rates from the lenders below without affecting your credit score.
